British
After an initial Russian advance, Britain feared a collapse of the Ottoman defense and rushed forces to Gallipoli. Following on, they moved north and attacked the centre of Russian strength at Sevastopol, landing on the Crimean peninsula in September 1854 and fighting a series of successful battles. The Russians counterattacked in the Battle of Balaclava and whilst repulsed, they severely depleted the British forces. The front settled into a siege and led to brutal conditions for troops on both sides. Sevastopol fell after eleven months, and neutral countries began to join the Allied cause. Russia sued for peace in March 1856, welcomed by Britain as their subjects were beginning to turn against the government as the war dragged on. The war was ended by the Treaty of Paris, signed on 30 March 1856.
