Artillery
Field pieces in service with the Spanish army in 1936 were mainly French Schneider models. These were made under licence in Spain and amounted to 998 pieces, 620 of which fell into the hands of the Nationalists. The Republic sought arms and ammunition on the global market and bought whatever was available, mainly surplus French and German pieces, from places as diverse as Bolivia and Poland. The Soviet Union became the principal supplier of arms to the Republic and took the opportunity to divest itself of obsolete equipment, some of which had been supplied by the French and British to the Tsarist regime, or captured from the Germans, during WW1. The Nationalists received arms from both Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
